When Can My Baby Start Drinking Milk?

I recently had some moms in the Dream Baby Cafe Facebook Community asking me questions about when to switch their babies from breast milk or formula to milk. They actually had many questions about this and so I decided to use this as a Q&A video. 

So, in this video I answer these questions moms asked me. 

Here are the issues I covered in the video and some highlights: 

• Transitioning  your baby from breast milk or formula to whole milk after their first birthday. 
• The reason why we don't give babies whole milk before the age of one.
• Which type of milk is recommended to give your baby (pasteurized whole milk until age 2, 1-2% after 2)
• Some optional milk choices  including: 

*Organic Milk

*Raw Milk (and why pasteurization is important and why babies and young children should not drink raw milk)

*Alternative non- milks such as Almond, Rice and Soy milks 

• Previous milk allergies and sensitivities in babies and can they drink whole milk
• How to make the switch to milk 
• How much milk do babies need daily (12- 16 oz/ day for one year olds and 16-24 oz/day for 2 year olds) and why we don't want babies drinking too much milk 
• How long babies need to take Vitamin D (as long as breast feeding, or until taking 32 0z/day of formula or until transitioned to whole milk fortified with vitamin D) 

I hope that you will find this video helpful. As always, these are guidelines in agreement with leading pediatric organizations. But, you should always discuss any changes with your own healthcare provider prior to making a change. Particularly if your child has any health problems, allergies or is on a special formula. 

It is an exciting time when your baby moves from one stage in their development to the next. They really do grow up so fast. And you are growing with them. It is hard to keep up sometimes!
